Thursday, Feb. 25th 2016 7:00 AM

As musicians, figure skaters and anyone who takes a driving test will know, the anxiety of being watched can have a disastrous effect on your performance.

Now neuroscientists at the University of Sussex’s Sackler Centre and Brighton and Sussex Medical School have identified the brain network system that causes us to stumble and stall just when we least want to.

Dr Michiko Yoshie and her colleagues Professor Hugo Critchley, Dr Neil Harrison, and Dr Yoko Nagai were able to pinpoint the brain area that causes the performance mishaps during an experiment using functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging (fMRI).

Share of Cost, The next anti-tuberculosis drug may already be in your local pharmacy

Friday, Feb. 19th 2016 6:00 AM

Tuberculosis continues to be a global pandemic, second only to AIDS as the greatest single-agent killer in the world. In 2013 alone, the tuberculosis bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis caused 1.5 million deaths and almost nine million new infections. Resistance to tuberculosis drugs is widespread, creating an urgent need for new medicines. EPFL scientists have now identified lansoprazole, a widely used, over-the-counter antacid, as an excellent candidate against tuberculosis. The study is published in Nature Communications.

Share of Cost, Let’s Review Tips to Avoid Phone Scams!

Thursday, Feb. 11th 2016 6:41 AM

Phone scams are ongoing and, like a virus, are always morphing. Yet, even with the constant change, below are some easy tips from the Senior Source newsletter (a publication from Senator Susan Collins, Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging) to help you and your loved ones avoid being victims of fraud and to help stop fraud.

Remember that con artists:

*   Force you to make decisions fast and my threaten you.
*   Disguise their real numbers, using fake caller-IDs.
*   Sometimes pretend to be the government (i.e. the IRS)
*   Pressure you not to contact your friends or family.
*   Try to get you to give your credit card or other bank account information.
*   Try to get you to provide your personal information, like your Medicare number or other account numbers.

If you receive any such suspicious calls, hang up and report it to our California Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) at 1-855-613-7080.

Share of Cost, Modern nuclear disasters, biggest risk is mental, not physical illness

Sunday, Feb. 7th 2016 6:00 AM

There are very few radiation effects suffered physically by people struck by modern nuclear accident. Instead, mental illness is the biggest risk, write the authors of a series of papers in The Lancet.

With respect to the most recent Fukushima incident, Dr. Koichi Tanigawa, of Fukushima Medical University in Japan, says:

“Although the radiation dose to the public from Fukushima was relatively low, and no discernible physical health effects are expected, psychological and social problems, largely stemming from the differences in risk perceptions, have had a devastating impact on people’s lives.”

Share of Cost, Can a Nursing Home Evict You for Being “Difficult”? Know Your Rights

Wednesday, Feb. 3rd 2016 6:02 AM

Can a nursing home evict you for being “too difficult”, limit the hours your family and friends can come visit, or deny you needed physical therapy services because you’re not improving? The answer to all of these questions is a big NO. Yet many people are uninformed of their rights when in a nursing home, which creates the right environment for some nursing homes to get away with activities that are both illegal and harmful to residents.

Share of Cost, Understand Medicare’s requirements for post-hospital care.

Monday, Feb. 1st 2016 9:10 AM

Hospitals must maintain an accurate, up-to-date list of Medicare participating facilities and providers that can provide appropriate post-hospital care. Follow-up care can include placement in nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, long-term acute care centers, and rehabilitation facilities. If you are returning home, you may get referrals for therapy services, home health care agencies, or hospice care. It is important to understand the coverage requirements for each type of post-hospital care to maximize your coverage and minimize out-of-pocket costs.

Regardless of whether you are being discharged to a facility or to your home, be sure to ask the hospital staff if you qualify for Medicare coverage of follow-up care. If you qualify for a discharge plan, the hospital must arrange transfers to skilled nursing facilities and provide referrals to home health and hospice agencies that accept your Medicare coverage. Hospital staff must also educate you, your family, and/or your caregivers about your care needs if you are returning home, and provide a clear list of instructions for your care, including all medications you will need.
