Adults who fail to maintain positive moods such as cheerfulness or calm when faced with the minor stressors of everyday life appear to have elevated levels of inflammation. Furthermore, women can be at heightened risk, the researchers say.

Share of Cost, Brain inflammation links chronic pain with depression

Wednesday, Jul. 29th 2015 7:00 AM

For the first time, scientists have discovered that brain inflammation caused by chronic nerve pain can affect signaling in the regions of the brain associated with mood and motivation. This discovery suggests there is a mechanism that connects chronic pain with symptoms of depression and anxiety that many patients experience.

The findings of the study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, could lead to new methods of treatment for chronic pain, the most common form of enduring illness for people aged below 60 in the US.

Treatment for Tooth Decay in Toddlers

Tuesday, Jul. 21st 2015 6:35 AM

Once a child has developed tooth decay, he/she will require dental work. Fillings may be used to correct smaller cavities, and a full crown may be needed if the damage is extensive. This will prevent the bacteria from spreading.

A tooth that has decay throughout may have to be extracted because the bacteria can cause the secondary, or adult teeth, to develop abnormally. Pitting or staining in the adult teeth may occur if decay is severe enough in the primary teeth.

Share of Cost, Scientists map surface of immune cells

Sunday, Jul. 19th 2015 6:00 AM

The immune system must constantly adapt to its environment in order to protect a body effectively. The so-called T cells are an important example in this regard. One of their functions is to form the immune system’s “memory”. Researchers recently examined the surface of precursors of these T cells and identified previously unknown proteins there. According to the scientists, the results could lead to new approaches for therapies for asthma and allergies.

Preventing Tooth Decay in Toddlers

Friday, Jul. 17th 2015 8:30 AM

In order to prevent tooth decay in toddlers, you should not let your child go to bed with a bottle or a sippy cup of milk or juice. If you have to give your child a drink before bed, always choose water. It is recommended that children drink milk or sugary drinks quickly instead of sipping them slowly. By do that it helps to reduces the amount of time during which teeth are exposed to decay-causing sugars from the drinks in a bottle or sippy cup.

Just like adult teeth you need to make sure you  are brushing and flossing your child’s teeth daily, and be sure to avoid sugary foods.  The ADA suggests that your child should see the dentist for the first time on or before his/her first birthday

Why do denture wearers have that bad breath?

Wednesday, Jul. 15th 2015 9:49 AM

Question: I have noticed people with dentures usually have extremely bad breath that permeates the whole room. Is this just an unfortunate side effect of wearing dentures, or are they not caring for their teeth properly?

Answer: Dentures can cause bad breath odor.  The exact type of bacteria and debris that accumulates on your natural teeth and gums will also accumulate on false teeth.   This includes those types of bacteria that produce the volatile sulfur compounds that are responsible for causing bad breath.

Treatment for bad denture breath:  A person must clean their dentures more effectively and they also need to more thoroughly clean those parts of their mouth where bacteria tend to accumulate. (This includes both the tissues their dentures rest on and especially the posterior region of their tongue.)

What Can Cause Tooth Decay in Toddlers.

Thursday, Jul. 9th 2015 6:31 AM

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, one of the common causes of toddler tooth decay is letting a toddler go to bed with a bottle. This particular condition is known as baby bottle tooth decay. The milk or juice from the bottle can sit in your toddler’s mouth all night and create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria which in turn causes tooth decay.   Also unhealthy eating habits contribute to tooth decay, too. Allowing your child to suck on candy for prolonged periods or to eat a lot of sugary foods will play a role.

Share of Cost, Celebrating Medicare’s 50th A Golden Anniversary for America’s Health

Tuesday, Jul. 7th 2015 8:49 AM

As a part of Medicare celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are collecting Medicare stories from beneficiaries across the country. They want to hear how having Medicare has benefited you and/or a loved one and the difference it makes/has made in your quality of life and wellbeing. Below is an announcement and invitation from CMS to hear and collect your stories.

In 1965, President Johnson signed legislation to establish Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for low-income adults, children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. Since then, these programs have transformed the delivery of health care in the United States. They have greatly reduced the number of uninsured Americans and have become the standard bearers for quality and innovation in American health care.

Chances are, you or a family member either have Medicare or Medicaid or know someone who does. In fact, about 55 million Americans have Medicare this year and more than 70 million have Medicaid in any given month. Has one of Medicare’s many covered preventive benefits helped detect cancer at an early and more treatable stage for you or a parent? Have rehabilitation services provided in a nursing home or in your own home helped you get stronger and return to regular activity after surgery? Has Medicaid helped pay for your parent to live in a nursing home or helped you or your children get treatment for an illness?

As part of the 50th anniversary celebration for these programs, the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is collecting stories of how Medicare and Medicaid have made a difference for everyday Americans. Please visit Medicare.gov/anniversary/share-your-story to share your Medicare or Medicaid story.

Share of Cost, Expectations About Future Use Of Long-Term Services And Supports Vary By Current Living Arrangement

Friday, Jul. 3rd 2015 6:30 AM

Most Americans know little about options for long-term services and supports and underestimate their likely future needs for such assistance. Using data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, we examined expectations about future use of long-term services and supports among adults ages 40–65 and how these expectations varied by current living arrangement.

We found differences by living arrangement in expectations about both future need for long-term services and supports and who would provide such care if needed. Respondents living with minor children were the least likely to expect to need long-term services and supports and to require paid care if the need arose. In contrast, respondents living alone were the most likely to expect that it was “very likely” that they would need long-term services and supports and to rely on paid care.

Overall, we found a disconnect between expectations of use and likely future reality: 60 percent of respondents believed that they were unlikely to need long-term services and supports in the future, whereas the evidence suggests that nearly 70 percent of older adults will need them at some point. These findings both underscore the need for programs that encourage people to plan for long-term services and supports and indicate that information about living arrangements can be useful in developing and targeting such programs.
