Share of Cost, What is Acid Reflux

Sunday, Apr. 29th 2018 6:00 AM

Acid reflux is a condition that occurs when acid from the stomach moves upward into the food pipe. The acid causes irritation of the tissue lining, which leads to heartburn – a burning sensation in the chest.

The American College of Gastroenterology estimate that over 60 million Americans experience heartburn a minimum of once a month. Some research indicates that over 15 million Americans may experience heartburn every day.

Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week can lead to a diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can cause ulcers and permanent damage if left untreated. GERD also increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

Share of Cost, Dental Crowns and Insurance Coverage

Wednesday, Apr. 25th 2018 5:13 AM

I have often wondered why dental insurance is a separate entity from other types of medical insurance… Last I checked, my teeth were still attached to my skull, and their potential to cause misery when not functioning properly is right up there with gallbladders and appendixes and the like. Good dental care is critically important, and should be affordable and available for everyone.

Dental crowns, also called caps, are expensive, from several hundred to several thousand dollars, with insurance typically covering only part of the cost. Dental insurance is the most commonly used to pay for major dental problems. Dental crowns are also commonly referred to as tooth caps, teeth crowns. Dental benefits plans can be categorized by the options offered for selecting a dentist. Dental plans can be categorized into three types based on the compensation and treatment provided. Dental insurance plans differ in the level of reimbursement offered for certain procedures and in annual dental spending caps.

Insurance plans vary, but in general most will not reimburse patients for a replacement until a crown is five years old. Insurance only then covers up to a certain amount per year (e. Insurance companies are still paying for bone grafts for bony defects around periodontally involved teeth. Insurance companies also have all kinds of little rules and limitations, which most patients with very little dental knowledge wouldn’t even know to ask their insurance company.
Some typical features of these plans: High deductibles before coverage begins (well-designed plans don’t apply the deductible to preventive services) Probationary periods on certain procedures that last up to a year Annual dollar limit on benefits Chose your own dentist Your average monthly cost: $15 to $25 companies selling these plans are regulated by state insurance departments. Dental insurance for family can significantly change the way teeth are improved. Dental insurance for family can give you some more offers and freebies that no other plan can give.

Understanding the Basics

Dental crowns are coverings applied over the tooth’s surface, and may be made of ceramic, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal (PFM), resin, or metal, including gold. Dental crowns are also useful in patients who grind their teeth or have bite problems, addressing the stressed area and stabilizing it to prevent damage. Dental crowns usually require 2 to 3 visits to your dentist, depending upon the health of the tooth receiving the crown. Today’s health insurance, including your dental plan, is designed to help you get the care you need at a reasonable cost. If you cannot afford a dentist, or are not covered by dental insurance, go to a dental school clinic, where dentists in training work on your teeth. I think they also offer periodic cleaning at reduced rates as well, by dental hygienists in training.

Share of Cost, Popular heartburn drugs linked to gradual yet ‘silent’ kidney damage

Saturday, Apr. 21st 2018 6:00 AM

Taking popular heartburn drugs for prolonged periods has been linked to serious kidney problems, including kidney failure. The sudden onset of kidney problems often serves as a red flag for doctors to discontinue their patients’ use of so-called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are sold under the brand names Prevacid, Prilosec, Nexium and Protonix, among others.

But a new study evaluating the use of PPIs in 125,000 patients indicates that more than half of patients who develop chronic kidney damage while taking the drugs don’t experience acute kidney problems beforehand, meaning patients may not be aware of a decline in kidney function, according to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System. Therefore, people who take PPIs, and their doctors, should be more vigilant in monitoring use of these medications.

The study is published Feb. 22 in Kidney International.

Share of Cost, Does insurance cover the cost of sealants?

Thursday, Apr. 19th 2018 6:58 AM

Dental insurance will often cover the cost of dental sealants; however, this is dependent on the level of insurance you purchased. Insurance benefits for sealant procedures have increased considerably, especially as companies start to realize that sealants are a proven preventive technique. You should check with your insurance company about coverage though and with your dentist to see how much they will cost. Before you take up insurance on teeth, talk with your insurance agent as to if cover is provided for teeth sealant application.

Share of Cost, Should Children Get Dental Sealants?

Tuesday, Apr. 17th 2018 6:57 AM

Children should receive sealants on permanent molars as soon as they erupt (about ages 6 and 12 years). Children with unmet dental needs suffer the daily distraction of chronic toothaches, the acute and searing pain of dental abscesses, disfigured smile, dysfunctional speech, and difficulty eating. Children with dental decay who lack access to dental care are often not brought to seek care until decay is severe.

Children are not stigmatized by being singled out during the screening and sealing process. Children need dental sealants applied again when new molars emerge, usually around twelve years of age. Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in before decay attacks the teeth. Children who would benefit most from sealants include those with existing pits and fissures that may develop cavities or those with risk factors for cavities. Children with sealants still should: Brush twice a day with a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Share of Cost, How Much Do Dental Sealants Costs?

Sunday, Apr. 15th 2018 6:56 AM

Treatment is cost effective because sealing a tooth costs less than filling one. The cost of dental sealants can range from approximately $25 to $50 per tooth. Of course, this may be a small price to pay compared to the discomfort and cost associated with dental procedures that may become necessary if your teeth remain unprotected.

The cost of dental sealants varies with location and practice, but is considered inexpensive compared to repairs and fillings. Dental sealants have been proven a safe and cost-efficient dental procedure. Sealants cost less than getting a single cavity filled.

Share of Cost, What are Dental Sealants?

Friday, Apr. 13th 2018 6:54 AM

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from tooth decay. Dental sealants are effective in preventing dental caries in the occlusal (chewing) and other pitted and fissured surfaces of the teeth. Dental sealants were assessed in permanent molars (occlusal and buccal surfaces in lower molars and occlusal and lingual surfaces in upper molars), premolars (occlusal surface), and upper lateral incisors (lingual surface).

Dental sealants are highly effective in preventing dental caries that occur on the surfaces of teeth that have pits and fissures. Dental sealants are usually applied in a dentist’s office. Dental sealants last for 4-5 years and can easily be reapplied by your dentist when they do wear off. Dental sealants represent one of the greatest, but least known advances, of modern dentistry.

Share of Cost, Novel dimensional approach uncovers biomarker for inattention

Wednesday, Apr. 11th 2018 6:00 AM

Despite diagnoses for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurring in a reported 11 percent of U.S. school-aged kids, clinicians still don’t fully understand the underlying causes of this common condition. Now a brain marker may be on the horizon, thanks to a new approach that provides evidence of a relationship between brain structure and dimensional measures of ADHD symptoms. The study’s results are reported in an Article in Press in Biological Psychiatry.

Allergic reactions to food happen when the body reacts to certain things we eat as if they were going to harm the body. Share of Cost, Gastrointestinal Problems

Tuesday, Apr. 3rd 2018 6:46 AM

Nausea after eating and other gastrointestinal problems may occur when an organ within the digestive system stops functioning properly.

For example, gastroesophageal disease (GERD) occurs when the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach malfunctions, causing stomach acid to enter the esophagus.

GERD causes a burning sensation throughout the esophagus known as heartburn and may be a cause of nausea after eating.

The gallbladder is responsible for releasing bile to aid in digesting fats. Gallbladder diseases impair the proper digestion of fats and can cause nausea after eating meals high in fat.

The pancreas releases proteins and hormones necessary for digestion. If this organ becomes inflamed or injured, known as pancreatitis, nausea often occurs along with other intestinal symptoms and pain.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic condition that can cause bloating and increased gas. In some people, this can lead to nausea after eating

Share of Cost, Food Intolerance’s or Allergies

Sunday, Apr. 1st 2018 6:00 AM

For some people they can have an intolerance to certain foods, which means that your body has difficult time digesting them.

Some food intolerance’s can cause a person to feel nauseated after eating.

Food intolerance’s do not involve the immune system but can cause nausea hours after the food is eaten. Common sources of food intolerance’s include:

* foods that contain lactose, such as dairy products
* gluten, such as most grains
* foods that cause intestinal gas, such as beans or cabbage

Food allergies occur when the body mistakenly identifies proteins found in certain foods to be a threat, triggering an immune system response.

Nausea caused by a food allergy can occur seconds or minutes after eating. It is often accompanied by a host of other symptoms, such as swelling to the face or lip and difficulties breathing or swallowing. These types of reactions are emergencies and require immediate medical attention.
