Share of Cost – Does Baking Soda Whiten Teeth

Friday, May. 13th 2022 2:21 PM

I do not have money to spend on whiten products but I been told that baking soda can whiten your teeth. Is this true.

Reply: While baking soda can help to brighten and prevent discoloration of your teeth, it will not necessarily make your teeth a whiter shade of white. You will probably need a whitening product that contains bleach for that.

Over 65 and Looking for Affordable Dental Insurance.

Wednesday, Apr. 20th 2022 5:09 AM

I am 69 with most of my teeth. I do not have dental insurance and I am finding that I can not afford to maintain my dental care without some dental insurance.  However I can not seem to find affordable dental insurance.  All the plans I seen are $50 plus a month this is just to much for me.

Reply:  I would suggest reviewing dental HMO insurance plans. You seem to have only reviewed dental PPO plans. Although PPO plans are good dental insurance plan that let you choose your own dentist they can be costly for seniors. Dental HMO insurance plans however run around 10 to 20 a month for an individual and they greatly reduce the cost of dental care services.

Seniors Oral and Dental Hygiene – ShareofCost.com

Sunday, Apr. 17th 2022 10:17 AM

Regardless of age daily brushing and flossing is essential in order to keep them in good dental health. Plaque can quickly build up on the teeth of seniors, this is especially true if oral hygiene is neglected and lead to tooth decay as well as gum disease.

Some seniors can run a higher risk of poor dental hygiene due to health, medication and other age factor limitations. In order for anyone to maintain good oral health it is important to maintain proper dental health care habits.

* Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day with toothpaste containing fluoride. Some seniors may have difficult time brushing and flossing their teeth if they suffer from arthritis or another condition that limits movement. In cases like that, try using an electric toothbrush, with rotating-oscillating bristles, which are effective at removing plaque and preventing gum disease.

* Floss at least once a day. If floss is too difficult to work with, try a floss pick or tiny brushes made to clean between teeth.

* Use an antibacterial mouth rinse so that you can reduce bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease.

* Visit your dentist on regularly for check up and cleanings. Some seniors may find this hard if they are not driving or can not drive. Therefore try to find a very local dental office as to make it easier to get to and from.  There are some senior assistance programs that drive seniors to their doctors appointments, so check to see if they also drive to dental appointments.  If you can see if there is a dentist within the same building as your doctors so that you can book appointment on the same day. You may also a dentist that still makes limited house calls for seniors.

Although it can be difficult for some seniors to maintain good dental hygiene habits, it stills needs to be done.  Studies show that your oral health is linked to many overall health care issues.  Therefore having poor oral health can effective you overall wellness.

Share of Cost – Dental Insurance

Monday, Apr. 11th 2022 6:48 AM

Because dental insurance is usually acquired as part of a job benefit package, most persons lose their dental insurance coverage when they retire. In some states, Medicaid provides limited dental coverage for routine dental care for low income and disabled elderly persons.

Medicare, on the other hand, does not cover routine dental care for older adults, but provides a few, very limited services considered to be “medically necessary.” With only 22 percent of the adults 65 years and older covered by private dental insurance in 1995, most dental care expenses for the elderly were paid out of pocket.

This website offers affordable low cost dental insurance that will greatly help with dental care cost.  Take a moment to review our dental insurance plan options and call member services if you should have any questions at 310-534-3444 M-F 8-5.  We are always happy to help you with any of our dental insurance plan options.

Share of Cost – Increase Risk of Oral Cancer

Friday, Apr. 8th 2022 12:44 PM

Oral cancer, which includes lip, oral cavity, and pharynx cancer, is a particular concern for persons 65 years of age and older, because they are seven times more likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer than persons under age 65.   In 1997, 4,775 people 65 years and older died as a result of oral cancer.

More older adults  died from oral cancer than from skin cancer (3,978) As with other cancers, survival improves when the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage rather than at a later, more advanced stage. Because patients with an early stage of oral cancer rarely have pain or other symptoms, detecting an early oral cancer is primarily dependent upon the clinician providing a comprehensive oral cancer examination.

Share of Cost – Periodontal Disease

Monday, Mar. 28th 2022 12:30 PM

Periodontal diseases other wise know as gum disease is an infection of the supporting structures of the teeth. When not treated, periodontal diseases can result in the loss of teeth. The occurrence of periodontal diseases increases with age, from six percent among persons 25-34 years and to 41 percent among those 65 years and older.

This increase is not necessarily due to older persons being more susceptible to periodontal diseases, but rather to the consequences of these diseases, which accumulate over time and are thus more evident in the elderly.  Preventing periodontal diseases is particularly relevant because recent studies have shown a possible association between these diseases and diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are major causes of death among the elderly population.
